Michael Levinas is an underappreciated French pianist. His Beethoven Piano Sonata Cycle is superb, quick and classical, and he brings a composer's insights to the music making process. I figured this would be much the same, though Levinas plays some pieces at a much more comfortable pace. He manages to make sort of make the piano sound organ-like, yet the textures never sound too heavy. His dynamics are excellent. (I should also note that his Beethoven Diabellis and Debussy Preludes are superb.) Sound is excellent, but not the best. I don't really like the five star system, because one can certainly find other sets out there just as compelling (eg, Schiff on ECM), but Levinas is unique enough and insightful enough to warrant consideration.
