While attending a recent Jazz Education Conference someone suggested I check out a CD by a female group named "The Lascivious Biddies" cause they were "unique and offbeat". Well, I immediately checked out the definition of "lascivious" and found it to mean: "indecent; immoral; lecherous". Hmmm. And then I looked up "biddy" which is defined as: a bird that is still young. Sure sounded interesting. So I got their CD and, yep, the name fits - well at least in spirit. The quartet of "young" women is out there to have fun and share it with their audience. Each came from a different background in jazz (pianist Deidre Rodman, guitarist Amanda Monaco), country and swing (lead vocalist Lee Ann Westover), or the Classical Music program at Julliard (bassist Saskia Lane). And the songs they write (along with covering a diverse group of songs from Lesley Gore's `60s hit "You Don't Own Me" to The Smith's "Ask". ) are as offbeat as their personalities. "Neighbor" is an off-kilter tribute to "the man in the sweater - Mr. (Fred) Rogers. Intellectual has all the feeling of a Sex and the City episode. The tone moves from country to swing to cabaret to just pure pop.Okay, so they aren't really lecherous, immoral or indecent (no "parental advisory" labels here) but you have to admit the group's name is catchy and it sure got my attention. Check out this CD and they'll probably catch yours!Steve Ramm "Anything Phonographic"
